10th June 2025 KASI will facilitate members of different ethnicities and cultures in Killarney to host Cultural Spotlight Killarney events for the remainder of 2025. Starting in June with the culture of Palestine, these will be evening gatherings where people living in Killarney can learn about different cultures of the world in a spirit of openness and curiosity.
Cultural Spotlight Killarney events will be held in KASI’s Log Cabin, at their Community Garden on Rookery Road in Ballycasheen. The first culture being highlighted is that of Palestine at 6pm on 19th June – the eve of World Refugee Day.
Locally-based Palestinian families will be cooking cuisine of their homeland and meeting people interested to learn more about Palestinian culture at the gathering. The free event will be held with support from the local Killarney for Palestine group, who have been organising regular solidarity vigils in Killarney since October 2023.
All Are Welcome
KASI’s Coordinator, Marilyn Catapat-Counihan, welcomes all people in Killarney to join and engage with the new initiative.
“We are really excited to bring this to Killarney and give people living here an opportunity to engage with different cultures and ways of life. We think this will spark people’s curiosity while also offering a chance for people to connect on the many related cultural aspects we all share. I hope all walks of life join this, whether you’re from Kerry, Kenya or anywhere in the world.”
“We are proud to be starting with Palestinian culture because that is a culture and people in the world whose very existence is under threat, due to Israel’s ongoing onslaught in Gaza and illegal settlement expansion in the West Bank.”
“I want to say a special thanks to the families eager to take part in this and connect despite such difficult times. Thanks also to the local Killarney for Palestine group for spreading the word. Any funds that happen to be donated on the evening will go to them to forward to a worthy cause in Palestine.”
